Southwest Philly Floater Sends #13 LaSalle To 1st Sweet 16 Since 1955
Philadelphia native, Bartram High School alumnus Tyrone Garland made an impressive last second layup over a 6'9 Ole Miss defender. That layup which won the game for LaSalle, was called the 'Southwest Philly Floater' by Garland during a post game interview. It has not been an easy road for La Salle or Garland. Ty committed to Virginia Tech and didn't see much playing time. This season he came home to Philadelphia. He comes off the bench for the Explorers, yet he finishes the games. Garland along with Duren, Galloway and Mills can all shoot, dribble and pass. They make it very difficult for opponents to defend the perimeter no matter if it's man or zone defense. What a week for the next to last team in terms of at large bid for the NCAA's. Dayton,OH for First Four win vs. Boise State. Off to Kansas City, Friday defeat Kansas State by 2 and Sunday knock off Ole Miss by 2. Now the Explorers are off to LA, where they'll take on #9 Wichita State who beat #1 seed Gonzaga, prior to that they beat #8 Pittsburgh. Both teams are playing inspiring basketball. LaSalle is the last Big 5 and Atlantic 10 standing. Enjoy the moment because 1955 was a long time ago, so was 1992 the last time LaSalle made the NCAA's or 1990 the last time they won a game in the tournament. Dr. John Giannini has done a wonderful job with this group. Once he lost big man Zack he had only one big man left Wright, who made critical free throws down the stretch vs. Kansas State. The winner of the Explorers / Shockers game will be Elite 8 bound
